Sneaky Winter Rays: Daily Sunscreen Is Important Year-Round

December 18, 2018

Many avid outdoor lovers tend to spend a lot of time in the sun and it can be obvious when a good sunscreen is needed. We see the sun shining in the sky and the heat waves rising from the ground and we apply an extra layer of SPF. But what about when we don’t have those natural signs telling us to use sunscreen?

It may not be apparent that protecting our skin from the sun’s rays is necessary year-round. But don’t be fooled by the dropping temperatures and overcast skies! The sun is still out there, even if we can’t see it.

When we think about the winter season we tend to not associate it with things such as sun exposure or sunscreen. We usually think of sunscreen during the winter as an optional item, not a necessity, for healthy skin. However, winter rays are just as dangerous and harmful as summertime rays. Leaving your skin unprotected from the sun for several months during the year can have harmful, lasting effects we want to avoid.

Even though we tend to enjoy the winter months from a cozy window, driving in our car, or walking quickly inside to escape the cold, the UV rays the sun gives off can still impact us. A large amount of our UV exposure we receive is from UVA rays which contribute to skin problems such as skin cancer, sun spots, and wrinkles. UVA rays are so powerful they can go right through the windows in your car or home, and through the clouds on overcast days. Most of us are getting more unwanted sun exposure than we can count in one day. And this is how those winter rays sneak up on us!

Now don’t let all of this talk about dangerous sun expose scare you off from getting out and loving our incredible planet. Sunscreen is just as effective in the winter as it is in the summer!

Try using a daily sunscreen. You can work this into your everyday skincare routine and get a sunscreen that doubles as a tinted moisturizer. This can protect you from unwanted UVA ray damage, in addition to adding moisture and some color throughout the winter months. Check out our Tinted Sunscreen-SPF 20 or in SPF-30. It gives you broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection for up to 80 minutes and is water-resistant so you can be safe in the sun year-round.

If you’re looking for a daily sunscreen and moisturizer without the tint, give our Sunscreen for Face and Body-SPF 20 a go. It’s lightweight and contains a non-greasy formula that is just what you want in a product you’re putting on your beautiful face.

If you’re reading this after already experiencing a surprise winter sunburn, try our Sun and Sting Relief Gel and our Nourishing After Sun Body Lotion, and remember to add sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to your winter adventure bag!

As our summer months fade away and we embrace the snow and cold winter months, don’t forget that the sun is still out there behind the overcast skies. Whether you’re jumping in the car, or hitting the slopes, grab your sunscreen and keep your skin healthy while you’re having fun!
