Shark Week: Shark-free Squalane & Scavenger Hunt

July 9, 2021

Why We Love and Need Sharks!

Sharks play an important role in multiple key challenges we are facing on planet Earth:

  • Addressing food security
  • Protecting biodiversity
  • Ensuring sustainable economies
  • Climate change

In the ecosystem, sharks play an critical role as apex predators by maintaining the species below them in the food chain in check. They help remove the weak and the sick as well as keeping the balance with competitors helping to ensure species diversity.

As an avid diver, I notice firsthand that the loss of sharks led to the decline in coral reefs, seagrass beds and, eventually the loss of commercial fisheries & dive tourism.

Picture of Autumn Blum, Stream2Sea CEO & Founder, and her momma, inspiring her love for sharks at an early age.

By taking sharks out of the coral reef ecosystem, the larger predatory fish, such as groupers, increase in abundance and feed on the herbivores. With less herbivores, macroalgae expands and coral can no longer compete, shifting the ecosystem to one of algae dominance, affecting the survival of the reef system.

Oceana: Predators as Prey: Why Healthy Oceans Need Sharks

At least half of Earth’s oxygen comes from the ocean. The decline of coral reefs and seagrass will also lead to less algae and phytoplankton that convert carbon dioxide to oxygen, and an increase in global warming. Ultimately, protect our sharks means protecting ourselves. #protectwhatyoulove

What We Are Doing at Stream2Sea

First of all, we support many non-profits and ocean conservation efforts. Check out our partners page for more info.

Secondly, we only contract services from companies who are environmentally responsible. For example, we do not use FedEx as a shipping provider because they do not ban shark fin shipments.

Lastly, our Stream2Sea is the first company to receive the Shark Free Certification by SharkAllies. Our Shark-Free Squalane & Nourishing Body Lotion uses plant-based shark-free Squalane.

As many of you already know, an estimated 2.7 million sharks are killed every year for their liver oil, squalene or squalane, a highly sought after moisturizing agent. The biggest offender is the cosmetic industry, although countless other industries share responsibility as well.

To earn the Shark Allies Shark Free seal of approval, companies must not only use sustainable squalene alternatives, but also list the squalene source right on their ingredients list. Take the guessing out, Stream2Sea is providing customers with pure squalane derived from olives!
