Most "reef-safe" sunscreens
aren't reef-safer at all.
"Reef-safe" is an unregulated marketing term — any brand can print it on any bottle with no testing required. What actually matters is what's in the formula. Here's what most sunscreens don't tell parents.
Oxybenzone — found in most conventional sunscreens
Oxybenzone absorbs through the skin into the bloodstream. Studies detect it in blood, urine and breast milk after a single application. Children absorb it at higher rates due to thinner skin. It's banned in Hawaii. Stream2Sea has never used it.
Children's skin absorbs more — the formula matters more
Children's skin is thinner and more permeable than adults'. Chemical UV filters enter the bloodstream at higher rates in children. The Everyday Active Sunscreen uses only non-nano EcoSafe Zinc™ enriched with Chamomile & Calendula — and is pediatrician-approved.
What you wash with also reaches the water
The shampoo you use after a swim goes down the drain and into waterways. Most shampoos use surfactants with no aquatic toxicity evaluation. The 32 fl oz Shampoo & Body Wash is tested biodegradable in freshwater and saltwater within 30 days.
The only mineral sunscreen that gets
stronger in water.
Most sunscreens lose protection after water exposure. Stream2Sea's WetBoost™ is water-activated — when it contacts water it reinforces the mineral barrier, forming a more flexible, even layer. That means your kids' sunscreen is working harder the moment they jump in.
How to use the bundle correctly
Getting the most from mineral sunscreen and a biodegradable shampoo — four steps that make a real difference.
Apply sunscreen to dry skin
Apply Everyday Active Sunscreen to dry skin 15 minutes before sun exposure. Work in small sections and blend thoroughly — no white cast when applied correctly.
☀️ Sunscreen · 15 min beforeReapply after 80 minutes
WetBoost™ keeps working in the water, but nothing replaces reapplication. After 80 minutes in the water, towel drying or heavy sweating — reapply.
⏱ Every 80 min in waterWash hair & body after
Use the Shampoo & Body Wash to rinse off sunscreen, salt and chlorine after swimming. Lathers well even in low-mineral water. Rinse thoroughly.
🧴 Shampoo · Post-swimRoutine done — every day
Two products covering your family's full outdoor routine. The 32 fl oz shampoo lasts a full season — so you're not constantly restocking.
✅ Full family routine"I believed my early prototypes would pass aquatic safety testing. They didn't. That failure changed everything. I reformulated from scratch — not to pass a test, but because I refused to sell a product that could harm the reef my customers were swimming on. Every ingredient in Stream2Sea has been through that process."
Parents who've made the switch
"I've been searching for a sunscreen that doesn't burn my son's eyes and doesn't have the ingredients I've been worried about. Stream2Sea is it. He actually doesn't fight me on application anymore."
"We have four kids and go through shampoo constantly. The 32 oz size is the only reason this fits in our budget. Same formula, less plastic waste, and I'm not running out. Will not go back to regular shampoo."
"Found this on the EWG website — all their sunscreens got the highest possible rating. We needed a Hawaii-compliant sunscreen and the kids formula ticked every box. The bundle made it a no-brainer."
"Pediatrician-approved matters to me. I love that I can trust what I'm putting on my children's skin. The WetBoost technology gives me real confidence — it actually works harder in the pool, not less."
Not satisfied? We'll make it right.
Every Stream2Sea formula is made to perform. If it doesn't meet your expectations, email hello@stream2sea.com and we'll sort it — no awkward returns, no runaround.
What parents ask us most
Why is oxybenzone a concern for families?
Oxybenzone is a chemical UV filter that absorbs through the skin into the bloodstream. Studies have detected it in blood, urine and breast milk after a single application. Children absorb it at higher rates due to thinner, more permeable skin. It's also linked to coral bleaching at concentrations as low as 62 parts per trillion. Stream2Sea has never used oxybenzone or octinoxate in any formula.
What does EWG Verified™ actually mean?
EWG Verified™ is the highest standard in the Environmental Working Group's rating system. It requires every ingredient — not just the active UV filter — to meet EWG's standards for human safety and environmental impact. Products are independently reviewed, not self-certified. All Stream2Sea everyday sunscreens are EWG Verified™.
Will the sunscreen leave a white cast on my kids?
Not if applied correctly. The key is applying in small sections and rubbing in thoroughly — about 30–60 seconds per area. Never apply a large amount in one spot. When blended properly it sits invisibly on most skin tones.
How does WetBoost™ Technology work?
WetBoost™ is a patent-pending technology that makes Stream2Sea sunscreens water-activated. When the formula contacts water, it reinforces the mineral barrier rather than washing away. Independent testing shows the formula performs 45% better after 80 minutes in water compared to initial dry-skin application.
Why is the shampoo in a 32 fl oz size?
Most families go through shampoo fast. The 32 fl oz gives a season's supply at a significantly lower cost per wash. It comes in an ocean-bound recycled plastic bottle. A pump head is available separately for easy dispensing — or you can decant into smaller travel bottles for beach bags.
Is the shampoo formula different from regular shampoo?
Yes — it uses no sulfates, parabens, DEAs, MEAs, TEAs or SLS/SLES. The formula is biodegradable in both freshwater and saltwater within 30 days — tested in real-world water conditions, not just sewage treatment plants. It's built for families who use it around water they care about.
Is Stream2Sea sunscreen compliant with Hawaii's sunscreen ban?
Yes. Hawaii's ban prohibits oxybenzone and octinoxate. Stream2Sea has never used either. Every formula uses only non-nano mineral UV filters. You can travel to Hawaii, the US Virgin Islands, Palau and any other reef-protected destination with Stream2Sea without any compliance concerns.
