The water calls to us, regardless of skin color; and whether you're gearing up for a dive, leading a snorkel group, or simply planning a day at the beach, sun protection is an essential part of every adventure. Yet for decades, the sunscreen aisle has told a different story to people with black skin and those with darker skin tones.

That’s why, this International Women's Dive Weekend, our founder and cosmetic chemist Autumn Blum joined the National Association of Black Scuba Divers to discuss why mineral sunscreen needs to work better for everyone.

The Truth About Melanin and UV Protection

Let's start with some facts: melanin does offer some natural protection against UV rays. But that protection is not a free pass. It has limits.

UV damage affects all skin tones. What changes is visibility. On deeper skin, skin cancer can be harder to spot in early stages, which makes prevention even more critical. Sun damage accumulates over time. If you're spending hours in the water, on the boat, the beach, or exploring sunny destinations, you need defense regardless of your melanin levels.

Reef-safer mineral sunscreen exists to help protect both you and the waters you love. That protection shouldn't come with a compromise on shade compatibility.

Why Mineral Sunscreen Matters for Water Lovers

Mineral sunscreens, formulated with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, sit on top of the skin and work by absorbing and reflecting UV rays. Unlike chemical sunscreens, which absorb into the skin, mineral formulas work by creating a shield between you and the sun. And because not all mineral sunscreens are created equal, they’re at their best when they're formulated to be safer for our bodies and aquatic life.

So what’s the trade-off? Appearance. Traditional mineral sunscreens leave a visible white cast on lighter skin. On Black skin and other melanin-rich skin tones, that cast can be even more pronounced and harder to blend, creating what many describe as a "ghostly" or grey-white finish. For too long, the message to people of color was simple: accept the white cast or switch to chemical protection.

That's not acceptable.

The Mineral Sunscreen Gap

The challenge of formulating mineral sunscreen for deeper skin tones isn't about whether it's possible; it's that the market didn't prioritize it as necessary until recently. Most sunscreen development has centered on lighter skin types, leaving Black people and anyone with melanin-rich skin to either:

•               Wear mineral sunscreen with visible residue

•               Switch to chemical alternatives (which won't help protect our waters)

•               Skip protection altogether

None of these options should be anyone's reality.

Stream2Sea's Commitment to Inclusive Sun Care

At Stream2Sea, we believe sun care should be science-based, inclusive, and made for anyone who loves the water. One easy way to reduce the whitening appearance in a mineral sunscreen is to use nanoparticles. That would work well for the whiteness, but nanoparticles have been shown to be significantly more harmful for the aquatic environment.  We will not use them.

Our SPF 40 Zinc Balm is our most sheer option for Black skin and other melanin-rich tones. Additionally, our Every Day Shimmer SPF 45 leaves a beautiful shimmery finish without a strong white cast. These sunscreens are formulated to complement your skin rather than contrast with it, while remaining safer for aquatic life.

What We're Learning

We won't pretend mineral sunscreen is perfect for every skin tone yet. Innovation in this space is ongoing. But we're committed to the work because sun care should never feel like an afterthought. Not for divers, not for swimmers, not for anyone who spends time in or cares for the water.

The conversation with NABS that Autumn brought to International Women's Dive Weekend matters because it centers voices and experiences that have been overlooked in skincare for too long. Black women divers and all black people deserve sunscreen that protects their skin and their passion for the ocean. All of us deserve formulas that respect our melanin and our planet.
