As reef-safe claims explode across sunscreen and skincare products, so does the confusion around what those words actually mean. The truth is simple but unsettling: “Reef safe” has no legal definition, and most brands using it have never tested their formulas on any marine organism.
That matters: because without real testing, even the cleanest, most natural ingredients can harm coral reefs, fish, and aquatic ecosystems.
“Reef safe only means something when it’s backed by evidence.”
— Autumn Blum, Founder & Cosmetic Chemist
This article is part of a three-part series covering reef-safe testing, cosmetic science, and environmental responsibility.
WHAT DOES “REEF SAFE” EVEN MEAN?
The terms reef safe, reef friendly, and ocean friendly are completely unregulated. A brand can put it on their label without:
- Testing on coral
- Testing on fish
- Reviewing biodegradability
- Checking ingredient persistence
- Any environmental toxicology testing
By saying we are "reef safer," we acknowledge that no product can be 100% harmless to the environment. Instead, we put thought into which ingredients we select, conduct independent, third-party testing, and make sure that all our production processes and packaging align with our eco-conscious principles.
Nonetheless, we believe there is always room for improvement and that sustainability is a process of trial and error, not a one-time achievement. This mindset of continual innovation is key to why we say we are "reef safer."
WHAT SCIENTISTS LOOK AT:
- Acute aquatic toxicity
- Impact on coral larvae and early life stages
- Biodegradability and biobased content
- Bioaccumulation potential
- Full-formulation testing — not just UV filters
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR CONSUMERS
Many shoppers assume “natural,” “non-nano,” “mineral,” or “biodegradable” means reef safe. But the reality is far more nuanced.
This is exactly why Stream2Sea chose to test… even when the industry wasn’t asking for it.
OUR PROMISE
Stream2Sea’s commitment remains clear:
- No animal testing of cosmetic products, but rather ethical, science-based environmental testing only when necessary to help safeguard our reefs for future generations
- Responsible, transparent environmental science
- Continuous improvement and advocacy for better testing alternatives
- And above all, protecting the waters and wildlife we love
Choosing Stream2Sea means choosing real science over assumptions, and products you can trust in the ocean.
