As tourism stewards, we need to ensure that the voices of the Pacific community and our cultures of conservation hold sway at the table when we discuss tourism development of our islands. – Kevin Mesebeluu, Director, Bureau of Tourism, Palau

In 2020, the Pacific nation of Palau was the first country to ban non reef-safe sunscreen that is harmful to corals and sea life.

What’s at Stake

Palau is an island in the Pacific archipelago

Surrounded by an aquamarine lagoon and covered in lush forests, Palau is home to over 200 natural limestone and volcanic islands.

High-volume tourism threatens Palau's future

While Palau’s environment is rich in biodiversity, it’s also fragile. Mass tourism arrived in the 1980s. Over time, threats to Palau’s food supply, beaches, coral reefs and heritage sites have increased.

Palauans are managing tourism to protect their children's future

All decisions are made with the future of Palau’s children in mind. The actions of visitors can leave a positive impact on Palau.

Palau is a small nation with a big vision

The Palau Pledge has become a trailblazing model of eco-conscious tourism. Palau is modelling a responsible way to enjoy the island.

We stand with Palau. Palau Pledge’s Planet Loving Sunscreen SPF 30 is a high performance mineral-based sunscreen in collaboration with Stream2Sea.

Palau is the first nation on earth to change its immigration laws for the cause of environmental protection. Upon entry, visitors need to sign a passport pledge to act in an ecologically and culturally responsible way on the island, for the sake of Palau’s children and future generations of Palauans. 15% of the sale of this sunscreen goes directly to Palau Pledge.

Usage:

NOTE: Applying a mineral sunscreen is different from what you might be used to! Apply in sections and remember that a little goes a long way. Reapply after 80 minutes of swimming, sweating or immediately after towel drying and at least every two hours.
