* Why is Stream2Sea Reef-Safer*?

You may have noticed that we are updating our packaging to say ‘Reef Safer*.’  When we started Stream2Sea in 2014, our primary goal was to create a product line that was safe for you and safe for our blue planet. We were the first – and as far as we know, are still the only – sunscreen manufacturer to have products that are tested and proven safe for freshwater fish, saltwater fish, and even coral larvae.

We believe that we offer the reef-safest products on the market, and since day one, we have loudly questioned what it truly means to be ‘reef safe.’  As the science has progressed and the debate has continued, it’s become clear that it would require far more testing to prove that anything is truly reef-safe because so many interconnected organisms work symbiotically to support our underwater ecosystems. We literally had to create a standard to measure the impact of sunscreen ingredients on fish and coral larvae – and took a lot of heat for doing the real science, but going beyond that scope to test on algae, phytoplankton, crustaceans, and other creatures is far more detailed than what any small business could manage.

At the same time, it’s become clear that the term “reef-safe” is over-used to the point where no one who understands the issues believes any label that makes that claim. We see major brands labeled as reef-safe that still contain aquatic toxins like butyloctyl salicylate and other petrochemical sunscreen ingredients. Consumers really need to take the time to read the back of the label where brands are required by law to list their ingredients.  We offer ingredient to avoid cards to make it easier to make safer choices.

While we truly believe we are the ‘Reef Safest’ products available, we have made the decision to update our packaging to ‘Reef-Safer*‘ instead. We believe in transparency and education, and hope that when people see Reef-Safer*, they will think through the issue rather than blindly choosing a product based on the big marketing letters on the front of the box.
