Reef-safer and ocean-friendly are much more easily understood. But biodegradability is a critical component of any product, whether it’s shampoo, sunscreen or body lotion. While most test for biodegradability in sewage sludge in a wastewater treatment plant, we ALSO test in fresh and saltwater - to be sure it would completely break down in less than 30 days in most water environments.

Any compound that isn’t readily biodegradable in real-world situations is likely to accumulate faster. That means it will show up in higher and higher concentrations either in water, potentially killing fish, or in the case of chemicals like oxybenzone, in fish and coral.
