Taking Time for Gratitude: 7 Things We’re Grateful for This Year

November 15, 2018

This Thanksgiving—as always—we are grateful for all of the work being done around the world to generate positive environmental change. We would like to recognize some of the great folks in our industry doing this work every day!

*

We are thankful for…all water-based tour operators who choose to support our mission towards eliminating harmful ingredients, like oxybenzone, octinoxate and parabens, from our streams, rivers, and oceans.

It takes a lot of courage for a dive shop or rafting outfitter to stand up and say they will not allow sunscreens that contain chemicals proven to harm the fragile underwater ecosystems to be used on board. And yet, every day we receive letters from those who are doing just that.

*

We are thankful for…those behind-the-scenes who have been researching the effects of chemicals on our reef, and fighting to be heard. Research like this leads to legislation, like the toxic sunscreen ingredient ban in Palau, that prevents harmful chemicals from ending up in the oceans.

We are very proud to support people who combine research with a passion for the planet!

*

We are thankful for…organizations like Lonely Whale, whose #StopSucking campaign to reduce plastic waste is something we absolutely love and support.

It’s an amazing time in this world of ours, where the online platforms we have at our fingertips allow us to communicate a movement that is so simple, and yet so powerful.

We’re on board. We don’t want to suck anymore.

We are thankful for…people out there, like Garrett Stuart (The Eco Preservation Project), Grace Ann Tuthill and Louis Marinucci, who have embraced curiosity for the world around them—and who help encourage others to see things differently. These are the people we love to have as our Wavemakers: people who help educate that what we put on our bodies DOES make a difference and who solicit change.

We are incredibly thankful for people like Garrett, Grace, and Louis and others on our team helping us do better in the world.

*

We are thankful for…the everyday efforts of those who leave every space they touch better off than they found it.

We are big supporters of the beach, reef, and coastline clean ups. But we are also incredibly grateful to anyone who picks up litter every time they go out!

We are also grateful to Anya Elis, instructor at Scuba-Fun in Key Largo, Florida, who brings the joy of the ocean to everyone she teaches to dive. Anya takes ocean advocacy seriously, and we thank her and all who treat the planet well while encouraging others to do the same!

*

We are thankful for…recent legislation that has made movements towards preventing harmful chemicals from entering our waterways.

No words can explain how excited we are that Hawaii passed legislation to ban oxybenzone and octinoxate from being sold, as did Palau. These are huge wins for everyone looking to conserve our planet’s waters.

We are grateful for this beacon of hope that others can adopt the same approach. That major tourist destinations can take a stand and be the change our waters need.

*

We are thankful for…YOU.

We started our product line because we believe that when it comes to what we use on our bodies, we can always be making better choices to protect our planet and ourselves. Little did we know, it would become a movement on its own. Your support, encouragement, and continued curiosity is what drives us.

Thank you for everything you do to protect the planet!!

Experience. Respect. Explore.
