REEF SAFE SUNSCREEN – TESTED AND PROVEN SAFE!

How Our Sunscreens Compare with Other Sunscreens:
Is Your Sunscreen is Reef Safe, Ocean Safe, Coral Safe and Body Safe?

Get the facts on reef safe, ocean safe, coral safe, and body safe sunscreen: Your health and your oceans depend on it.

Did you know that the terms “reef safe”, “ocean safe”, “coral safe”, and “body safe” do not have an actual standard definition when it comes to sunscreen?

There are no federal regulations defining the use of words like ‘natural’ or ‘green’ when it pertains to biodegradable sunscreens, body care products or cosmetics.

Unfortunately, the same goes for these terms (like reef safe): just because a product says reef-safe does not mean you are in the clear. The term reef safe doesn’t have an agreed-upon definition, and therefore isn’t strictly regulated by government.

This means sunscreen manufacturers aren’t required to test and demonstrate that such products won’t harm aquatic life.”Some brands will add a very small percentage of an ingredient in their products, then put safe, natural, green or organic on the label. This is not only misleading, but is not cool!

Common sunscreen ingredients, such as Benzophenone-3, also know as Oxybenzone, can bleach coral and damage coral reefs. Cylcopentasiloxane/Cyclomethicone are silicone-based ingredients, used in skin and hair care products, have also been shown to be toxic and to bio-accumulate in aquatic organisms. They are also suspected to be reproductive toxins and endocrine disruptors.

When Stream2Sea first started a lot of our start up costs went to independent testing labs to be sure that our products are not only effective and safe for you, but safe for our planet as well.  The fact that other sunscreen companies are trying to create a product that is earth-friendly while protecting you is very good. But, you have to educate yourself to make sure those statements on other products are actually valid.  It is essential to compare and contrast sunscreens to make sure that you’re not only getting the SPF protection you need, but also the sunscreen really is doing what is says and protecting reefs, the ocean, coral, and the earth, too.
