The release of our new EveryDay Mineral Sunscreen marks two major advances for Stream2Sea. It’s our first-ever mineral sunscreen made with only Eco-Safe™ Zinc Oxide rather than titanium dioxide because we finally found a non-nano zinc oxide that really is reef-safe.

Even more importantly for our most active customers, it’s a brand-new formulation with our patent-pending WetBoost™ Technology that makes it even more effective after you’re wet. That means after you swim or sweat, your SPF protection only gets better instead of washing away like most sunscreens.

What’s so special about this product?

Most sunscreens lose 30 – 60% of their sun protection after 80 minutes in the water, but NOT Stream2Sea! Besides the fact that our new Every Day Mineral Sunscreens go on light and sheer, these formulas are so water-resistant, that they actually perform BETTER after you go for a swim!

It’s made with hydrophilic natural polymers that attract water and form a light film on your skin that provides better coverage. It’s not exactly the same but it’s kind of like that powdery stuff in diapers, which is a polymer that can absorb way more than its weight in water. Our polymers are plant-based and much smaller, so you don’t get the bulk or the goo-iness, but you still get the benefit of an expanded molecule that covers more skin without weighing you down or making you look like a 1960s lifeguard.

Ironically, it wasn’t anything I intentionally formulated – it just turned out that way. I was TRYING to formulate an incredibly water-resistant mineral sunscreen that would be non-whitening, feel light on the skin and be non-greasy, but what I ended up with totally blew my mind! When we sent it off to be tested (as required by law), the lab triple-checked their work to make sure that it really did get ‘better when wet.’ It turned out to be so unique that I filed a patent for it!

And while the WetBoost Technology is already getting headlines, the Eco-Safe™ Zinc Oxide is pretty exciting too. Most zinc has been coated with synthetics like triethoxycaprylylsilane or shrunk to nano-size so it’s easy to apply, but both make zinc oxide toxic in an aquatic ecosystem. Our new EcoSafe™ Zinc is coated with a natural wax and has a larger, but flatter molecule than others that are commercially available. This allows it to apply sheer to the skin, spread well, AND has been thoroughly tested and proven safe in fresh and saltwater.

That doesn’t mean we expect all our customers to stop using our original (OG) formulations! Our original SPORT Sunscreens are made with titanium dioxide, which has a long history of use and safety for both humans and our precious aquatic environments. It does have more of a whitening effect than the new Every Day formula, but our loyal users love it for the long-lasting and gentle protection it delivers. It is both water and sweat-resistant, so it’s great for extended use and extreme adventures and is still the only mineral sunscreen in the world tested and proven safe for fish and coral larvae.

So why would you choose one over the other?  It’s really a matter of preference — like the old saying: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” If you already love our SPORT Sunscreens and they work for your active lifestyle, then don’t change! If you’d like to try something new that’s easier to apply (to dry skin) but still performs brilliantly, check out the new EveryDay Mineral Sunscreen.

Pro-Tip: we always suggest applying sunscreen BEFORE you go outside, but this is even more important with our new Every Day Sunscreens. These apply easily and brilliantly, as long as you are dry. As soon as your skin gets wet, the polymers activate and it takes quite a bit more effort to rub in. Apply early!
