The First Country to Ban Reef-Toxic Sunscreens Selects Stream2Sea for Palau Pledge Campaign

June 6, 2022

Stream2Sea’s proven safe for you and our waters sunscreen is chosen by Palau for a
co-branded sunscreen line to help raise awareness and funds to protect the nations’ fragile
ecosystems

Palau has had a special place in my heart since my first visit in 2014. Stream2Sea was literally conceived while I was there, as we were watching toxic sunscreens and shampoo flow off a liveaboard over a pristine coral reef. It gives me incredible pleasure to partner with the country of Palau in the Palau Legacy Project which directly supports local environmental projects.

Together, we’ve created a new sunscreen — the Palau Pledge Reef Safe Sunscreen – using the only formulations in the world that have been tested and proven safe on fish in both fresh and saltwater as well as vulnerable coral larvae. It was given to delegates attending the Our Ocean Conference in April 2022, and will now be sold in Palau and to retailers in other eco-conscious countries with 15% of the purchase price directly going back to the Palau Legacy Project.

Palau was the first nation to ban the sale of sunscreens containing ingredients known to harm their reefs and was also the first to change its immigration laws to protect those sensitive ecosystems. Before entering the country, visitors must sign the Palau Pledge and promise to act in an ecologically and culturally responsible way, on the island. If you haven’t watched their video – I encourage you to do so. It gives me goosebumps every time.

This is Palau Pledge’s first internationally accredited sunscreen, and we’re delighted to be part of the effort to raise consciousness and directly support reef conservation. Funds raised through the sale of the Palau Pledge Sunscreen will go toward the Friends of the National Marine Sanctuary to support environmental education programs in schools, a dive camp for young Palauans, and eco-tourism awareness campaigns across the island nation.

If you’re not planning a trip to Palau this summer, you can get a tube on our website at www.stream2sea.com. Going back to Palau is definitely on my list! You can purchase Stream2Sea’s Palau sunscreen here.
